Introductions

When I was little I loved to listen to my Granny read stories. We’d snuggle in her armchair drinking tea while she told me of lions and magic wardrobes, or King John’s India rubber ball. And so my love of storytelling began.

I like to tell tales of what it is to be human, be it in speculative fiction or memoirs. Personal experiences shape my stories and disability is a common theme, entwined with growing up, parenthood, and how our lives might look in an alternative future.

Books can take you to another world to escape this one, or ground you with the knowledge somebody else understands. I don’t think there’s anything much better than that. Except maybe a nice cup of tea.

Speculative Fiction and Memoirs

Writing is an invitation to discover a past world I’ve lived before, and a whole new world just outside of familiarity. Both areas can be dark and raw and lead the way to unexpected journeys.

As a young adult with a mobility disability, a new mum with chronic pain, and a carer for two children with their own medical conditions, I am always looking to find connections with others who understand, be it through memoir or fiction. Finding the support I was desperate for in stories allowed me to discover new ‘best friends’ that made me feel I wasn’t alone, and escapism when my world was hard to survive in.

Life can bring complications and things we don’t know how to handle on our own. The emotional honesty experienced through reading and writing memoirs, or weaving lived experiences into fiction, can offer comfort and reassurance. I hope my pieces will offer readers what I am always searching for - companionship, freedom, or just a jolly good read.
