SBS Voices Publish Short Memoir

Today SBS Voices published an extract of a short memoir I submitted to their Emerging Writers’ Competition 2021. Judged by Tara June Winch, the theme of the competition was ‘Between Two Worlds - stories from a diverse Australia.’ There are so many incredible stories told on this website, and it’s incredible to be able to tell part of mine within so many moving pieces.

This memoir shares my experiences as a mother with a disability watching her two children being diagnosed with orthopaedic conditions. Here’s a short section of the excerpt published:

A new kind of fear snatched my hand when I had my babies. The kind that told me I could never be the mother they needed. My arthritic body wouldn’t cope. In the post-night feed darkness, swirling taunts added another suffocating weight of unease. My babies might be broken…like me.

If you would like to read more, you can find it here on the SBS Voices website.
